When the wall fell, my father and his parents were able to visit family and friends in what was then still Czechoslovakia for the first time since 1968. Of all the impressive experiences I made during that trip to my father’s hometown, the one of my grandmother facing her very best friend again after all these years of forced silences is still burned into my mind.
